Rock Wool

Manufacturing Process:

The rock wool industry began in the '20's. The product uses the same manufacturing process as fiberglass. Instead of using glass or sand, the main material is molten rock or slag.

Water Permeability and Moisture Absorption:

Rock wool fibers are non-hygroscopic. Any moisture lies on the surface of the fibers and not within them. Water vapor permeability is in the range of 100 perm/inch, and water absorption is up to 2% by weight.

Fire Resistance:

Rock wool is considered noncombustible with a melting point of around 1,800 degrees.

Content and Shipping:

Rock wool is mostly a byproduct of other refinery products. The product is bulky, resulting in high packaging use and higher fuel delivery costs.

Selections:

Rock wool comes in 1", 2" and 3" thicknesses, and in 16" or 24" wide.

Application:

Rock wool is used mainly for sound control due to its density. It is not a durable product and is prone to sagging. It is one of the more expensive fibrous insulations on the market.
